I Feel Sad about Emma Stone's New Face
If she was already stunning and still needed 'work done,' what hope do the rest of us have?
Ever since the image below hit the Internet a few weeks ago, the consensus is in: Emma Stone has a new face. She’s had “some work done.” One of the best actresses of my generation, Stone looks gorgeous and radiant, as she always has.
And I can’t helping feeling sad about it.
Stone doesn’t owe me anything related to her face, of course. I imagine that she, like every woman in Hollywood, feels enormous pressure to maintain the illusion of never having aged in a human body. As female celebrities are trotted out for our assessment via mass media, they both fulfill and perpetuate our tightly held beauty standards. Some of those standards have changed over time; others are obdurate.
Based on what I see on my Instagram explore page (a dangerous page if ever there was one), today’s beauty standards seem to be: Women should be very thin (size 0-2), have sculpted, feline features — sky-high cheekbones, a small chin, no faci…
